Prospects and challenges in assessing ecological groups of tree species during tropical forest succession

چکیده
Since the days of Theophrastus (ca 373-287 BC), botanists have been classifying forest trees into different categories, based on a variety of criteria. Grouping species into different types is important for addressing both applied and theoretical questions, from selecting species for reforestation programs to understanding the maintenance of high species and functional diversity in tropical forests. Tree species are often grouped according to functional traits such as maximum growth rate, seed/seedling morphology, wood density, asymptotic height, longevity, pollination syndrome, seed dispersal syndrome, sexual system, response to fire, or re-sprouting potential. Alternatively, species have been grouped according to vital rates, such as rates of recruitment, mortality, and fecundity. A third method of classification is based on species’ size distributions within a given forest stand.

Vegetation-Environmental Relationships and Ecological Species Groups of the Ilam Oak Forest Landscape, Iran
The study was carried out in the Ilam Oak forest that is located in the west part of Iran. The objective of this research was to determine the plant ecological groups and site classification in this region. Data were collected from 117 sample plots using the systematic-random sampling method. The size of sampling plots was 20 m?20 m for the tree and shrub species and 1.5 m ?1.5 m for herbaceous...
متن کاملTree–Shrub Interactions During Early Secondary Forest Succession in Uganda
One of the greatest challenges for ecologists this century will be restoring forests on degraded tropical lands. This restoration will require understanding complex processes that shape successional pathways, including interactions between trees and other plants. Shrub species often quickly invade disturbed tropical lands, yet little is known about whether they facilitate or inhibit subsequent ...
متن کاملNature and Age of Neighbours Matter: Interspecific Associations among Tree Species Exist and Vary across Life Stages in Tropical Forests
Detailed information about interspecific spatial associations among tropical tree species is scarce, and hence the ecological importance of those associations may have been underestimated. However, they can play a role in community assembly and species diversity maintenance. This study investigated the spatial dependence between pairs of species. First, the spatial associations (spatial attract...
متن کاملWhy are there more arboreal ant species in primary than in secondary tropical forests?
1. Species diversity of arboreal arthropods tends to increase during rainforest succession so that primary forest communities comprise more species than those from secondary vegetation, but it is not well understood why. Primary forests differ from secondary forests in a wide array of factors whose relative impacts on arthropod diversity have not yet been quantified. 2. We assessed the effects ...
متن کاملSpecies Diversity of Trees and Forest Floor Plants in Oriental beech Forest Types of Shastkalate Educational and Research Forest, Gorgan)
Trees are the most important biological elements of forest ecosystems. The variability of the tree species composition inhabiting in the Oriental beech forest, not only forms different forest types but also has a remarkable impact on the species diversity of forest floor plants, due to the existence of trees in the overstory layer. In this research, forest types of an an Oriental beech were ide...
